Chapter Eleven: What Are You Hiding?

I sat in my father’s study, running my thumb along my forefinger while I waited for him to finish up his phone call, so we could discuss what needed to be done. The Palais de Valenmont was a success ever since the story about my mother had made headlines. Everyone was starting to shut her out, and she couldn’t go anywhere without the paparazzi hounding her, firing off questions she’d rather not answer. I was surprised when Audrey told me that my mother had told her to plan an extravagant party, and I knew better than to think that people weren’t going to show up. Everyone was dying to get to the bottom of her affair, to unearth all of the secrets that had been hidden for years, but I had much more complicated things on my mind.

I wondered how long the public was going to eat this up before they started digging deeper into our family, trying to uncover more of the truth. It was killing me that I had no idea what Derek had been talking about when he spewed those ridiculous remarks at the grand reopening of the hotel. You’ve got a lot to answer for, Brother. I hope Audrey can keep you busy long enough for me to rummage through your things. There has to be more that you’re hiding, and if I know you well, you’re just waiting for the next opportunity to cause another spectacle.

“Sorry about that, Jamie. It’s like ever since I retired, I haven’t been able to catch a break. With trying to get everything sorted so you can take over and the story about your mother’s affair finally coming to light, I don’t have any time to think about much else,” my father said, and I shook my head at him. I wasn’t about to let him dance around the real problem any longer because if I did, it would just mean I’d be right back to where I was a few months ago, hoping Father would finally have the courage to let go of his precious company.

“You really have a knack for worrying about all of the wrong things, Father. Your son is the reason all of this has happened. You do realize that, don’t you?”

“Haven’t I told you that I’m handling it? Besides, you have far more important things to worry about, Jamie. The hotel, your wedding, your future,” he said.

“I won’t have a goddamn future if you let Derek back into our lives for good, Father. I don’t understand why you don’t trust me enough to tell me what he has on you. I can handle it, just like I have been handling the business ever since you had become too damn blind to see that it was a sinking ship. I saved it, or have you forgotten?” I asked, shaking my head at him in disgust.

“You did what you had to do to protect this family, and that was one of the reasons I decided to give you so much leniency in the first place.
